Experimental analysis of new moment resisting steel connections

Abstract. In the recent past, authors proposed a new steel device devoted to representing an innovative moment resisting connection for frame elements called LRPD (Limited Resistance Plastic Device). It is element characterized by symmetry with respect three orthogonal barycentric planes and constituted sequence of portions abrupt cross section changes, each one identifies suitably designed geometry. possesses following characterizing features: any elastic flexural stiffness variation original selected member must be avoided; bending resistance appropriate reduced percentage beam resistance; local instability phenomenon avoided ensuring full plastic deformation field. previous papers deep description geometrical mechanical features optimal design formulation are reported. present paper first stage experimental campaign on behaviour presented. Specifically, pure investigated performing four-point test. The test performed monotonically until ultimate acts specimen. response LRPD, both in terms deflections as well axial strains evaluated means positioned displacement strain gauges. HEB240 beams. obtained results confirm expected performance constituting fundamental step subsequent steps mainly cyclic tests.
